Problem Chain Test Prep Centers

  • Revenue-driven, not results-driven. Large prep franchises are built to keep students enrolled as long as possible. Their business model depends on volume, not outcomes. The longer a student stays, the more they pay — there is no incentive to actually solve the problem.
  • More practice is not the same as better understanding. These programs flood students with hundreds of practice questions and timed drills. But if a student doesn’t understand why they got a question wrong, doing fifty more of the same type will not fix it. Repetition without comprehension is just reinforced guessing.
  • The instructors are not trained educators. Most chain centers staff their classrooms with college students or part-time tutors who have no teaching credentials, no pedagogical training, and no experience diagnosing why a student is struggling. Knowing how to solve a math problem is not the same as knowing how to teach someone else to solve it.
  • Tricks break down when the format changes. Strategy-heavy programs teach students to recognize question patterns and apply memorized shortcuts. This works — until the College Board changes the wording, adjusts the format, or tests the same concept from an unfamiliar angle. Without conceptual understanding, students have nothing to fall back on.
  • One curriculum for every student. Chain centers use standardized materials designed for scale, not for the individual. A student missing foundational algebra concepts sits in the same session as a student who needs help with advanced problem-solving. Neither gets what they actually need.

Problem School Math Classes

School math instruction is designed around one goal: making sure students can follow a procedure to get the right answer. Every lesson, every worksheet, every test is built to guarantee a predictable outcome. The result is robotic execution — students learn to replicate steps, not to think. Creative approaches are rarely encouraged, and students who solve problems in unconventional ways are more likely to be corrected than celebrated.

The SAT does not work this way. It rewards flexibility, not compliance.

School subjects are also taught in complete isolation. Geometry is only geometry. Algebra is only algebra. Students move through each course in its own silo, never connecting one domain to another. But the SAT routinely tests algebra in the context of geometry, statistics through real-world modeling, and functions inside coordinate plane reasoning. A student who has only ever seen these topics separately will struggle when a single question requires all of them at once.

On top of that, pacing leaves no room for the kind of connections the SAT rewards. Teachers have 180 days to cover a fixed curriculum for 30+ students. There is no time to pause and show how a system of equations can be solved in 15 seconds with the right insight, or how one concept threads through three different domains. Those are exactly the moments that separate a 600 from a 750.

What the SAT Actually Tests

We tell our students: this is not a calculus test. The content on the SAT cannot be harder than what you have already learned in your math courses. The difficulty is never about advanced material — it is about how deeply you understand the material you already have.

For most of the challenging questions we have seen, the math itself is not the hard part. What makes these questions difficult is what they demand from the student:

  • Patience to show all the work and make connections. Rushing through steps is how careless mistakes happen. The students who score highest are the ones willing to write out every line, check every sign, and trace each step back to the question’s intent.
  • Critical thinking across scenarios and possibilities. Many questions have more than one valid approach. The SAT rewards students who can consider multiple paths, evaluate which is most efficient, and adapt when their first instinct does not fit.
  • Comprehensive understanding that connects multiple domains. A single question might require algebra, geometry, and data analysis working together. This is not about learning tricks to beat the test — it is about building a well-connected concept map and a wide selection of mathematical tools, so that when a student sees a question, they can correctly identify its intent and know exactly which tools to reach for.

Concepts First, Strategies Second

Many test prep programs overwhelm students with a long list of strategies without building the conceptual foundation those strategies depend on. We take the opposite approach. Our instructor scaffolds each math domain systematically so students understand the "why" behind every problem. With the redesigned digital SAT placing greater emphasis on conceptual reasoning, this foundation matters more than ever. When students truly understand the concepts, effective strategies follow naturally.

Class Time Is for Teaching

We believe instructional time should be spent on instruction — not on silently working through practice tests. Students complete practice sets and full-length practice tests at home, then bring their questions to class and study sessions. Every minute of class time is dedicated to deepening conceptual understanding.

Guided Pacing, Not Self-Pacing

Self-paced programs leave students to decide how fast or slow to move — but most students don't know what the right pace looks like. Our experienced instructor sets a deliberate progression through all 15 sessions, and with a maximum of six students per class, every student receives the attention needed to stay on track and grow throughout the program.

15 Weeks, Not 15 Hours

We do not believe in cramming — and neither does the SAT. The test is designed to measure genuine understanding, not short-term memorization. That is why this course is structured as 15 weekly sessions, not a weekend boot camp. Each class builds on the last, and the week between sessions gives students time to review, practice, and absorb what they have learned. Students who try to compress everything into a few days before the test end up memorizing procedures without understanding them — exactly the gap the SAT is built to expose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my student join mid-course?

No. This is a structured 15-class sequence that builds progressively, and each lesson assumes familiarity with the material covered in earlier sessions. Students must enroll from the beginning of the course.

What math background does my student need before enrolling?

For the fall semester and summer camp offerings, students must have completed Algebra II prior to enrollment. For the spring semester offering, students currently enrolled in Algebra II at school are eligible. This is a comprehensive SAT Math review course — without a solid Algebra II foundation, students will not be able to keep pace with the material.

Are practice materials provided?

Yes. All practice materials are provided throughout the course at no additional cost. Our exercises are carefully calibrated to match the style and difficulty of questions released by the College Board.

What kind of score improvement can my student expect?

Students who attend every class and complete all assigned exercises can expect to score 700 or above (out of 800) on the SAT Math section. We have seen students who started below 600 improve their scores by 100 points or more.

When should my student start SAT prep?

We recommend beginning SAT preparation at least six months before the test date. This allows enough time to work through the full course sequence and complete all practice questions and official practice tests released by the College Board.

What if my student misses a class?

There are no makeup classes. However, every lesson is recorded and students receive access to the recording after each session. We encourage families to review the schedule carefully before enrolling — classes run on Thursdays from August 20 through December 10 (no class October 15 and November 26) — to avoid conflicts.

Mr. Chan holds a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.A. in Science Education from UT Austin. He has taught at Clements High School, facilitated programs at Rice University, and has been recognized with the UTeach Distinguished Alumni Award, U.S. Presidential Scholar's Most Influential Teacher honor, and multiple other teaching awards. His approach centers on conceptual understanding — helping students see the "why" behind every problem.
