William Chan

Biography

In the summer of 2001, at Hong Kong International Airport, William embarked on a journey to the United States to pursue his education. As a 16-year-old, a question lingered in his mind: "What distinguishes the American education system as superior, and can we blend the strengths of Eastern and Western approaches?" At that time, teaching was far from his thoughts. Stepping onto American soil, he sought enlightenment in the realm of education.

Since then, Mr. Chan has traversed the globe, comparing and dissecting education systems and pedagogical techniques. From classrooms in China, Brazil, France, to his homeland of Hong Kong, he unearthed a fundamental principle essential for enduring learning and comprehension: conceptual teaching. While seemingly straightforward, its effective implementation demands profound expertise. Throughout his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, he delved into the challenges students face in mastering chemistry and mathematics.

Embarking on his career at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas, Mr. Chan translated research-backed methodologies into his teaching, disseminating insights on conceptual teaching in chemistry at prestigious forums like the National Science Teachers Association annual conferences. His scholarly contributions merited him a role at Rice University, where he guides and trains chemistry educators.

Mr. Chan's teaching ethos is underscored by his unwavering dedication to each student's educational journey. Recognizing that trust forms the bedrock of effective instruction, he tailors curriculum materials to resonate with students' lived experiences, infusing lessons with relevance and curiosity.
